SINAPSE Image of the Month: First in-vivo scan with ICE multi-channel 7T head coil

June 2019 SINAPSE Image of the Month

June2019

Courtesy of Dr Shajan Gunamony, Dr Paul McElhinney, and Dr Sarah Allwood-Spiers, this image is a sagittal slice aquired using a custom 7 Tesla multi-channel head coil, which was designed and built at the Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE) in Glasgow. It consists of an 8-channel transmit array in combination with a 32-channel receive array and is capable of operating in both the single and multi-channel transmit mode of the scanner. Furthermore, its open-face design approach makes this setup less claustrophobic and improves patient comfort.

In the pairs of images below - scans of the same brain with the same sequence parameters - the image at right demonstrates the overall improvement in coverage that was achieved with this setup in the single transmit mode compared to a commercial 7T head coil at left.
