SINAPSE Image of the Month: First scan from new 7T MRI facility

May 2017 SINAPSE Image of the Month

May2017

Courtesy of Prof Keith Muir, this image is the first scan from the first 7T clinical MRI scanner in Scotland: the new 7T Siemens Terra system at the recently opened Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE) in Glasgow.

Acquiring this time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) image at ultra high field strength shows the blood vessels in the brain with great detail -- the brain here belonging to Prof Muir himself. The capabilities of high-resolution and high signal-to-noise imaging achievable at 7T can be appreciated by comparing the pair of images below. At left is the 7T MRA image from the Siemens Terra and at right is an MRA image of the same brain from a 3T Siemens Prisma.
