SINAPSE Image of the Month: R2* MRI brain map

September 2017 SINAPSE Image of the Month

Courtesy of Vasiliki Mallikourti, this image shows an R2* map of the brain where every voxel in the image has an R2* value. R2* is the decay rate of the MR signal, and is proportional to brain iron concentration. So, the higher the R2* value, the higher the iron concentration. In this image, the putamen is brighter compared to surrounding brain regions. This means that the putamen has higher R2* and, hence, higher iron concentration.
