Courtesy of Dr David Alexander Dickie, this image shows white matter hyperintensities (blue) in structural brain MRI from a middle-aged participant in the UK Biobank study. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) often occur as we get older but also represent an increased risk for early stroke, dementia, and death. However, many people live long and healthy lives in the presence of WMH and so researchers across SINAPSE are working to better understand this process and how to limit its potentially negative impact.
