Summary of 2022 SINAPSE ASM

Summary of 2022 SINAPSE ASM

The 14th SINAPSE ASM was our first in-person 2-day event on the 13th and 14th of June. We were hosted by the University of Strathclyde in the new Learning and Teaching Building. The full agenda, abstracts and keynote speaker biographies are available in the 2022 ASM Programme.

We opened with Plenary Session 1 and after an introduction for SINAPSE Director, Dr Jennifer Macfarlane our first Keynote presentation was from Prof Tonya White (ERASMUS MC-Sophia) on "Paediatric Population Neuroimaging and the interplay between brain development and psychopathology", Our first poster Lightning Pitches round took us to the lunch break.

Four parallel sessions followed lunch - Parallel 1: Clinical Applications, chaired by Dr Rosalind Mitchell-Hay (NHS Grampian); Parallel 2: Cognitive Neuroimaging, chaired by Dr Adam Waldman (University of Edinburgh); Parallel 3: Image Analysis/Methods, chaired by Dr Gordon Waiter (University of Aberdeen); and Parallel 4: Ultrasound, chaired by Dr Joanne Cleland (University of Strathclyde).

After a tea break Plenary Session 2 commenced, with three Keynote talks. Dr Sarah Vinnicombe (Gloucestershire NHS Trust) with "Towards personalised Breast Cancer Screening: the evolving role of Imaging"; Dr Joan Ma (Queen Margaret University) "Developing ultrasound imaging as a clinical tool for swallowing assessment"; and from LA via video link Dr Damini Dey (Cedars Sinai Medical Centre) "Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular CT". The session was followed by the conference dinner at Citation in the Merchant City.

Plenary Session 3 opened Day 2 of the ASM. Our first Keynote was from Prof Kevin Blyth (University of Glasgow) "Mesothelioma and Pleural Imaging". This was followed by our ECR Rising Star talk, this year given by Dr Clarisse De Vries (University of Aberdeen) "Could Artificial Intelligence support breast screening? Lessons from a local evaluation in NHS Grampian".

After a quick tea break we had another series of Parallel Sessions - Parallel 5: Neurological Disease, chaired by Dr Magdalena Ietswaart (University of Stirling); Parallel 6: Methods Development, chaired by Dr Victoria Gradin (Universidad de la República, Uruguay); Parallel 7: Cardiac Imaging, chaired by Dr Stephen Gandy (NHS Tayside) and Parallel 8: Breast Cancer Screening, chaired by Dr Clarisse De Vries.

After lunch we had Plenary Session 4, our final session. Three colleagues presented updates from imaging centres around Scotland: Dr James Ross (University of Aberdeen), Dr Tom Gilbertson (University of Dundee), and Prof David Porter (University of Glasgow). Dr Jennifer Macfarlane announced the prize winners, for the best presentation in each Parallel Session, and the best poster for each day, and closed the event for this year.

Following the main event delegates were able to attend a workshop on ITK-SNAP software presented by Dr Ankush Aggarwal (University of Glasgow).

The exhibition featured stands and representatives from Thermidas, NRS Mental Health Network, Philips, Gold Standard Phantoms, Novosound, ImSAT, NordicNeuroLab, GE Healthcare, Bartec, Canon MVSE, Siemens Healthineers and Ballater Medical.

We'd like to thank our volunteers for making the event run so well Ahmed Al Fuwaires, Patricia Foia, Lauren Gilmour, Ben Hicks, Craig Macfarlane, Andrea Orthodoxou, Sara Scarfo, Jayden Tomkinson, and Fabian Yii.
