Capsule ultrasound project wins Humanitarian Engineering Impact Award

Dr Gerard Cummins from the Sonopill team at the NI Global Engineering Impact Awards ceremony

A Scotland-led research programme to develop swallowable, ultrasonic endoscopic capsules with multimodality sensing has won this year's Humanitarian Award as part of the 2019 Global Engineering Impact Awards, sponsored by multi-national company National Instruments (NI). The awards celebrate the most innovative and impactful engineering projects from around the world.

The EPSRC-funded Sonopill programme has been led by Prof Sandy Cochran at the University of Glasgow, in a multidisciplinary partnership with scientists at Heriot-Watt, Dundee and Leeds universities. Over 5 years, the research team implemented a full-featured system, taking Sonopill prototypes from initial characterization through encapsulation to final deployment for preclinical validation.

Further details on Sonopill research and impact, recognised with its NI Global Engineering Impact Award, can be found here, and a video from the awards ceremony in Austin, Texas, can be viewed here.
